Ladywood Readers Club
It has seriously been a hot minute since I wrote a review! With my book coming out and working on the next, my reviews have taken a back seat but my reading hasn’t.
I’m choosing to do things a little differently and have moved to monthly reviews. I hope to post a few of them at a time. I aim to read at least 2-3 books a month.
Eva Mallory’s Husband Hunt by Katherine Dyson
I came across this book as it is someone in my writing group! This was not an ARC copy. I purchased it from Amazon Kindle for $3.99 CDN and am glad I did.
Tropes: Dating, mystery (curse), family bonds, co-workers.
As the title claims, Eva Mallory is on the hunt for a husband, but not for the reason you might think. Poor Eva has been cursed her whole life. What can go wrong will go wrong. REALLY wrong. (Just read the opening chapter…) and she has an epiphany that if she can change her last name she can erase the curse. With the help of her twin sister, and her ciocias’ she creates a list of potential suitors, but can they survive her curse?
What I loved- The family. This was a very female-empowered book with a great dynamic between the generations of women.
Eva and Luke. Something about them just hits you right in the heartstrings.
This story has everything. Family, angst, undeniable attraction, spice, & a family curse? Yeah, it was a great read.

Fallin Hard for the Royal Guard by Megan Clawson
I borrowed this one from my local library! It was a quick read, which was good since I was on a borrowing deadline of only 7 days.
One of the unique things in this book was the author’s note. I seldomly do this (I know, terrible right?) but take a minute to read it.
Our FMC- Maggie doesn’t exactly have it all together. In fact, she’s a bit of a hot mess and after leaving her cheating ex, she’s found herself living back with her dad in the confines of the Tower of London in a job she despises with co-workers who are nothing but jerks.
But a chance meeting with a cute stranger has her looking on the bright side of things, until she realizes he’s one of the royal guards. How on earth can she capture his attention when he is specifically trained to ignore everyone?
I liked the plot and the hot mess FMC. I did notice that this book was a lot more about self-journey than actual romance (there are some very cute moments here and there.)
One thing I didn’t love there was a lot of bird talk and scene setting which takes up a lot of pages. I would have preferred more romance between the characters.
This is a sweet, no-spice romance.

The Stopover by TL Swan
Okay, this one is the complete opposite of the other two books. This is book 1 of 4 in the series, and wow does it have ALL THE SPICE.
Tropes: Billionaire romance, boss/employee, one-night stand starts it all.
Our lucky FMC Emily finds herself upgraded to first class thanks to an unruly passenger who assaults her luggage. Felling a little out of sorts she decided to indulge in the free champagne and help take down the nerves of her already crappy day. Lucky for her she is seated next to an absolute hottie who doesn’t mind a little flirty banter to take up their eight-hour flight time.
Since things can’t get out of hand while there in the air, Emily plays it up, but when a snowstorm has them with an unexpected layover, things get a little too hot and heavy. Emily finds the resistance to her handsome stranger, Jim is no longer there. They spend one hot and heavy night together never to be seen again… HA!
Cut to a year later when she starts her first day at her dream job when she is introduced to her bosses, bosses, boss only to find a familiar face.
Things I loved- The spice. Oh, this had all the good stuff in it. I love her new friends and all the drama they add. I like how Jameson (Jim) has no intentions of letting things go and stops at nothing to get her.
The camping scene! I could read that over and over.
Things I didn’t love- Um, this was kind of toxic, and for a minute I didn’t love Emily. She seems BITCHY. Her character is all over the place and feels a little juvenile. It all worked out in the end but I did pause for a minute trying to figure out if I loved or hated her.
