August Book Recs…

This blog is long overdue. I haven’t posted a book recommendation in months and not because I’m not reading-but because I have been so involved in other author-y stuff, like finishing book 2, rebuilding my website, branding etc. Not to mention momlife/worklife with it being summer. The blog was shoved to the back burner. Things should be returning to normal once back-to-school hits in a few weeks. But here are my latest book recommendations.

Nine Month Contract- Amy Daws

Wyatt is our grumpy mountain man who happens to want a baby of his own- without the complications of a relationship or baby mama drama. As unconventional as it seems his niece, Everly sets out to help him fulfil his dreams of being a dad by finding him a surrogate through a hilarious ad.

Trista is in a rough spot and needs money to open her animal santcuary, and since she has zero desire to become a mother thanks to her own misguided childhood, she hopes she can bring happiness to another couple through surrogacy. It’s a win-win for her because it could give her the money she needs. Except she’s rejected for not being the perfect frame size. (Rude…)

On her way out she slams into Everly, who sees an opportunity to pitch her uncle Wyatt as unconventional way for her to still be able to be a surrogate. Privately.

Trista is reserved at first considering the circumstances, but agrees to at least one meet and greet. She tosses down her skepticism when the grumpy, but hot Wyatt not only offers to cover expenses but also offers a separate apartment over an empty barn…the perfect spot for her pet cow, among other rescues who might need a home.

Honestly the entire concept of this book is hilarious and off kilter. And the spice… DAMN.

The down side- Trista was a little bit over the top, and whiny which I didn’t love. It is a story about surrogacy and while I know little about it, I’m not entirely sure this is how it would go. But, it’s also fiction and meant to be fun, so keep that in mind if you pick up a copy.

The Guest List- Lucy Foley

Every once in a while I feel like I need a palette cleanser and I tend to switch genres. I usually find myself leaning back into my love for murder-mysteries.

I borrowed a copy of The Guest List from my local library and I loved it. I read it in three days which said something considering how busy things were, but I was so intrigued by these characters it was worth the late nights.

It is multi POV so you’re getting the story from varied angles, like a puzzle.

This is not a new release so I shouldn’t be spoiling it too much. The main focus of the book is the elite wedding of Jules Keegan the publisher of a popular new online magazine and Will Slater the up and coming tv star from the Survive The Night.

The wedding is held on a remote Irish Island that has whispered rumors of hauntings and death.

Although there is about 150 on the guest list for the wedding day the story really focuses on the close group of friends who stay there for the weekend. Her best friend Charlie and his wife Hannah, Jules the 19-year-old sister to Olivia, and then the rowdy groomsman Johnno, Duncan, Femi, Angus, Peter. Although the latter of the groomsman beside Johnno play side characters and little-to-no POV.

The murder is truly a mystery and nearly everyone has motive.

The loved- The intricate assemblance of cast leaves you wondering more and more about who they are and what they’re hiding, how they all came to be in the reveal- amazing. Some of it I guessed and others not even close.

The downside-The guys have very much a secretive, private school mentality where boys will be boys and reliving their “glory days” since leaving what seemed to have been a pretty awful all boys school. Their chanting and shenanigans does get a little tiring through the story.

The Paris Apartment- Lucy Foley

Because I loved The Guest List so much, I had to read The Paris Apartment.

As you can see by the title it’s set in Paris (who doesn’t love that?) in a very upscale vintage building (kinda gave me Murders in the Building vibes and I love that show).

The premise of the book is that Jess has caused a little to much heat back home and is in need of a place to crash. Her brother, Ben, reluctantly agrees and gives her the address except once she arrives he has vanished leaving only a tiny amount of meaningless clues, but as time goes in it’s evident he didn’t leave voluntarily. Jess discovers more about not only her brother, but about the apartment, and it’s residents. There seems to be some dark secrets hidden in the old building. The problem in a new city, with no friends or alibis she’ll have to trust the people who may very well be the danger.

I liked the book it has some interesting twists and how the characters intertwined. It was unexpected, but I found it a little flat in the thriller area unlike The Guest List. Now, with that said if I had of read them a different times then maybe I’d have a different opinion and it’s still worth the read.
